Why is beef jerky so dang expensive?

Why is beef jerky so dang expensive?

I'm always wanting to try some, but I'm turned off when I see the price. What's the reasoning behind the price?

Beef is fairly expensive to begin with, especially the good cuts, and then you reduce it by half by making it into jerky.

Beef is expensive, and beef is about 60%-70% water, and 10-15% fat. When you remove the water and fat, you're left with about 1/4 of the weight you started with.
Add in the processing, and you can easily see jerky costing 4x-5x the equivalent weight of beef.

I used to complain constantly about the price of beef jerky. Then I made some.

Omg. It's expensive to buy the meat, it's time consuming to make, and I ate it all so quickly!

level 1

I made my own once and thought I'd save money but it was so good I ate more at a time and probably lost any savings over eating store bought. But if you have more self control than me might be worth it

level 1

Lean cuts for jerky might be reasonably expensive in the area and you have water losses from the dehydration process which adds to the cost.

A lot of brands take a lot of profit though. I would recommend buying bulk, making your own or knowing someone who does and can offer it cheaper.

Meat is expensive on it own but usually jerky uses expensive ingredients for seasoning. You are also paying for the time is takes as it has to be dried out which is a process that can't really be sped up to an extreme degree. It's also usually a non automated process so it's done by hand which also makes it a lot more expensive as you're paying for labor time too.

Just try it! A small bag is like $5. It's not going to ruin you

The good stuff is worth it. Get yourself a dehydrator and make your own. It's delicious! I just made 3 pounds over the weekend for about 15 bucks

Too expensive when they make beef nicey

level 1

Making your own jerky is pretty easy. About a quarter the cost.

level 2

Not really. It's cheaper to buy store bought than to process your own jerky unless you procure the meat yourself. After making jerky for years I know I've spent more making it that I would ever buying it. Jerky is honestly fairly priced for the cost of meat and amount of work involved.

level 1

You're starting with say $5 of meat. You then dry it to roughly one quarter its' original weight so now you have $20 per pound jerky, not to mention the processing costs involved.

level 1

It takes a lot of beef to make beef jerky. The pieces are so small because they get seriously dried out

level 1

No idea, but in South Africa a popular snack called biltong is very similar. You can make it yourself fairly easily, and it tastes good as fuck. Probably much cheaper than buying it already made!

level 1

Everyone saying because beef is expensive is wrong.

My dad's a butcher and his biggest profit margin is beef jerky. You can make jerky with cheap meats from a cow. Jerky is expensive because of demand. People want it and people will pay high prices for it.

level 2

Jerky is expensive because of the price of meat no idea what nonsense your spewing but we love to use good cuts to make our jerky. Using anything else is terrible since your going to be chewing all day. Then combine the actual work and time involved to dry out the meat. Especially if you use a dehydrator of any kind then your looking at 3k for a decent machine. To say it's cheap to make and it's overpriced because of demand is absolute nonsense when the stuff in stores sits on shelves vs how fast homemade jerky is used up. It's all the effort that goes into making jerky that ups the price combined with the high start costs for the meat itself.

level 1

Because it's a pain to make. I make a lot of jerky.

level 1

That's why I stopped buying it. Slim Jims are reasonably priced, especially at Walmart.

level 2

Over the past year it has become extremely hard to find Slim Jim's where I live. I guess it is a supply chain issue.
